of Happiness

Joe DiCostanzo reports today:

Went briefly into Central Park at lunchtime with Steve Quinn and Liz Johnson from the AMNH. We found an adult male Eastern Bluebird along the bridle path about 50 yards south of Sparrow Rock. It was still there when we left about 30 minutes later.

The Third Owl

One of three [count 'em 3] Barred Owls to visit Central Park on 11/11/12

On eBirds NYC today Suzie Elliott reported her encounter with 3 Barred Owls, first reported yesterday by Judy Rabi.:

I was just walking toward an exit to go home when I saw the give-away sign of people with binoculars and large cameras standing in a bunch and looking up.

The owls were fairly high in the trees. A couple of times one flew from one tree to another, which was breathtaking. A work crew was cutting dead branches from trees and started in on one with an owl sitting in it, until convinced that wasn't a good plan!

I'd never seen barred owls before; they looked huge to me.
Could not get great shots from that angle with a point-and-shoot camera, but here [is one]...
